History
The Hungarian National Archives were established in 1756 in the then capital of Hungary, Pozsony (Pressburg/Bratislava). The institute was moved to Buda in 1784 and located in its present main building in 1923. The building and the archival holdings were severely damaged during the 1944-45 and the 1956 sieges of the city. The largest public state archives in Hungary, the National Archives primarily holds the documents of the central state administration and various public, economic and financial organs as well as documents of families and individuals. In 2012, all the Hungarian municipal (county and city) archives were administratively incorporated into the central state archives, under the name National Archives of Hungary (Magyar Nemzeti Levéltár), making it the principal repository in Hungary holding collections pertaining to the Holocaust. Besides its archival and administrative functions, the institute also conducts various research projects, publishes extensively and organizes conferences, lectures and other academic and public events.

Archival and Other Holdings
The 73,000 metres of archival holdings of the National Archives of Hungary are divided into sections and main record groups (fonds) in historical and chronological order as well as on the basis of administrative units or type of records. The archival material created before 1945 have been registered in sections marked with capital letters. The record group of key importance for EHRI is Section‘K’, which holds the records of government organs and central courts from the period 1867–1944, including the Head of State’s Cabinet Office, the Prime Minister’s Office, the Parliament, ministries and various state organizations and agencies. Other relevant record groups include Section "P" (Archives of Families, Corporations and Institutions), Microfilm collections (about 63,5 millions of pages) and large collections of maps, plans and photographs.
