History
The Croatian State Archives in Zagreb (CSA) are the central archival institution in the Republic of Croatia. It performs archival services related to archival and current records created by state bodies, state and public institutions and enterprises, by corporate bodies, and by families and individuals whose activity covers the whole or a greater part of Croatia, or is of national interest. Its beginnings are symbolically linked to the year 1643 when, according to a decision made by the Croatian parliament, state treasurer Ivan Zakmardi de Diankovec ordered the establishment of a special Chest of Privileges of the Kingdom in which to store the state's charters, privileges and legal regulations. It subsequently became the national archive and has since expanded through the establishment of separate units that assume specific roles within the archival service. The CSA today operates the following departments: the Department for the Protection and Processing of Archival Records, the Department for Information and Communication, the IT Department, the Croatian Film Archives, the Central Laboratory for Conservation and Restoration, the Central Laboratory for Photography, the Department of Comprehensive and Financial Services and the Department of Archives of the Archdiocese of Zagreb.
Archival and Other Holdings
The Croatian State Archives holds more than 29,000 linear meters of archival records, dating from the 10th century to the present day and arranged into more than 2,150 archival fonds and collections, mostly created by central state administration bodies and educational, cultural, health care and military institutions.
Finding Aids, Guides, and Publication
At the end of 2006 Croatian State Archives started the construction of a new archival information system which would cover all archival functions: keeping, preserving, arranging and use of archival records. ARHiNET is a web application which includes several modules: security and authorisation; description and processing of archives; archival registers and documentation; creators and holders of archival material; preservation of archives; digital content; and education. It enables the establishment of a national integrated system for the exchange of information among institutions that hold archival records as well as the standardisation and upgrading of services in the archives. In October 2007, the online registry of archival fonds and collections of the Republic of Croatia, which is an integral part of the ARHiNET system, was made publicly available, and online access was provided to the data on archival records kept in the archives and in other institutions that hold archival material. The registry currently contains data on 15,000 fonds and collections, 70,000 other archival units (series, files and items), 19,000 creators and 7,000 records creators and owners, more than 4,000 finding aids and 3,000 bibliographical units on archival holdings, as well as a few thousand digital copies of particular documents. Data is continually entered and updated on the basis of submissions by records creators and owners under the supervision of the State Archives. Around 750 employees from more than 200 various institutions are currently registered in the system.
