History
The Institut für Stadtgeschichte works to preserve the history of the City of Frankfurt, and to continue making the city's historical records widely accessible. The archive houses many of the city's administrative files. The archive at the Institute for Stadtgeschichte contains materials from as early as the Middle Ages. The Institute experienced a great loss of material during World War II.
Archival and Other Holdings
There is a division between old and new materials of the archive of the Institut für Stadtgeschichte (Städtisches Archiv bis 1868, Städtisches Archiv ab 1868). The former contains city administrative documents and documents of social, cultural and religious institutions of Frankfurt from the Middle Ages and early modern times. The latter contains records of municipal and city council meetings in addition to documents of Frankfurt offices and businesses.
