History

The archive was created, as other state archives, following the statutory act Government Resolution of 9 January 1950 on archival service. A stronger foundation came with the government regulation on Archives in 1954. The archive was organizationally subordinate to the Regional Administration of the Ministry of the Interior and the number of its employees was expanded. Commissioning of new archival material always meant a lot of effort, due to a lack of storage space. It took a lot of persuasion, reasoning, and ultimately improvisation and physical toil. By 1992, the State Regional Archive in Prague managed to secure an additional 7,000 linear meters. The decisive turnaround came in the second half of the nineties, after the construction of new archival depositories in the area, which added up to a total of 31,820 linear meters extra space. All archives are stored in optimum conditions, complying with the strictest standards. A new stage has come with the relocation of the State Regional Archive to the archive area on Chodovci, one of the most modern archive buildings in Europe. Extensive changes necessitated the reorganization of the public administration in 2002. State Regional Archive in Prague became a state organization incorparating the 12 district archives of the Central Region, which became its internal organizational units.

Archival and Other Holdings

The State Regional Archive in Prague holds a total of 30 kilometers of documents from the year 1166 to the present. Their weight is estimated at 1,500 tons. Archival funds come mainly from the activities of regional bodies, institutions and government agencies and financial management, mining authorities and judicial authorities. It contains many archives of noble families and their estates in central Bohemia. Funds of economic nature relating to the activities of large companies and financial institutions from Prague and Central Bohemia industrial area give this character the most important archives of the State Regional Archives in the economic sphere.
