History

The Archives was initially established on November 11, 1963 as a separate branch of the State Archives of Brest Region

In November 1996, the Archives was renamed the Zonal State Archives in Kobrin.

Archival and Other Holdings

Amount of holdings: 444 fonds, 105975 items

Chronological scope: from 1944 to the present

Geographical coverage:

  • abolished Divin, Ruzhany and Shershevo districts of the Brest Region
  • Bereza, Kobrin and Pruzhany districts of the Brest Region

Contents: The substantial part of the archives are the materials of the district and town deputies councils, village councils, statistical institutions, collective and state farms, courts, prosecutor's offices, labour organizations, and machine-&-tractor stations.

The activity of the district, town and village councils is represented by the protocols and decisions of the executive committee sessions and meetings and by the documents relating to the work of the permanent commissions, the executive committee commissions, and the district commissions for the election to the local councils.

The fonds of the agricultural institutions retain records relating to the postwar restoration and development of agriculture, and the creation and work of the collective and state farms and agricultural firms.

The records of the statistical institutions reflect the development of economics, local industry branches, culture, housing stock, and the number of population.

The industrial development is reflected in the fonds of the major factories and plants. These are the Bellegprom textile factory and the Lona clothes factory in Kobrin, the energy-mechanical plant in Beloozersk, and the hydroelectric power station in Bereza. These include job plans, salary schedules, records on gross output and production cost, staff training and distribution, labour efficiency, certificates for manufacturing of serial products, reports on capital construction.

The records of the social and cultural institutions illustrate the work of clubs, libraries, hospitals, medical institutions, the construction of schools, and the creation of the network of educational institutions.

The fonds of the government agencies contain lists of the central, regional and district enterprises; lists of social organizations; information on political parties and the press; lists of heads of various institutions and enterprises; and more.

The records of the executive committees include data on property privatization, living space quotas, tenders, etc.

The fonds of the manufacturing enterprises include business-plans, statistical reports on cooperation with foreign countries.

Of the most valuable are the records on Nazi damage caused to Belarus in WWII; lists of citizens deported to Germany; records concerning the restoration of public economy in the postwar period, the liquidation of illiteracy, and the staffing of the district executive committees and departments and district schools.

The Archives holds the collection of personnel records of various institutions in the Bereza, Kobrin and Pruzhany districts: –institutions of the public education system from 1944-1960 (children's homes); –institutions of the purchasing, supply and sales system from 1944-1952.

In addition, the Archives holds collections of personal papers of the participants of the Russian Civil War (1918-21), the Second World War, politicians and public figures.
