On 14 December 1998 in the presence of the federal minister of justice, Dr. Nikolaus Michalek founded FStN, which holds records of Nazi crimes within Austria.

The Research Center for post-war Trials a holding area for altogether knowledge of the records, thus not only the files but additionally paper copies, microfilm and digital media. The center provides both electronic finding aids and microfilm copies. Research and development work occurs at the Dokumentationsarchiv des österreichischen Widerstandes (DÖW), and microfilms are kept in the Österreichischen Staatsarchiv.
