Founded in 1914, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee provided assistance to Jews around the world, particularly in eastern Europe. During the Nazi era, this umbrella agency for aid organizations in the United States was involved in emigration planning and relief work in Germany, until 1939 providing an increasing share of the budget for German Jewish organizations, such as the Reichsvertretung. The Joint efforts continued after the war began and extended beyond the Reich into countries occupied or controlled by Germany.

The most prominent official Jewish institution in Poland following the Holocaust, the Centralny Komitet Żydów w Polsce, attended to the needs of Jews from fall 1944 until 1950. It sponsored a variety of programs, providing food, shelter, education, medical assistance, cultural activities, and employment services and vocational training. The CKŻP also supervised the repatriation of Jews from the Soviet Union and assisted with legal emigration. The CKŻP was supported financially by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee. Head of the Warsaw Judenrat. Kept a diary from September 6, 1939, until the day of his death (suicide). It was published in 1979 in the English language as the The Warsaw Diary of Adam Czerniakow: Prelude to Doom.

Jewish-Polish political and social activist and cardiologist. Co-founder of ZOB. He took part in the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, becoming its leader after the death of Mordechaj Anielewicz. He also took part in the city-wide 1944 Warsaw Uprising. Before his death on 2 October 2009 Edelman was the last surviving leader of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.
