“Decreti di revoca di confisca dei beni ebraici”, that is decrees of un-seizure of Jewish belongings, made by a specific bureau (Ufficio stralcio amministrazione beni israeliti) of the Agricultural Bank of Mantua, in order to give them back to the legitimate owners. There are also copies of the original decrees of seizure of Jewish belongings.

Bianca Massarani was a Jewish woman born in Mantua on December 12th, 1891. Her father was Emanuele and her mother Delfina Gugenheim. In 1945 two properties owned by her were confiscated by Ente Gestione e liquidazione immobiliare beni ebraici (Management and Liquidation Office of Jewish Real Estate Properties or “Egeli”; see this fonds in this portal, child items n° 1 and n° 2 - busta n° 1, n° 63; busta n° 5, n° 567). She had lost Italian citizenship and in 1954 she unsuccessfully tried to recover it, sponsored by two priests (don Giovanni Guernelli and monsignor Giulio Ghidoni).

Matilde Coen, born in Mantua, Italy, on November 12th, 1916, was a Jewish teacher who asked for an official certificate as racial persecuted in 1961. To escape racial persecution, in March 1944 she went to Switzerland, from where she came back to Italy in May, 1945.

Clara Levi, born in Modena, Italy, on August 27th, 1921, married to Roberto Coen, was a Jewish teacher in Mantua who asked for an official certificate as racial persecuted in 1960. In 1943 or 1944 she went to Switzerland to escape fascist and nazi persecution; in 1944 she gave birth to a baby in Mendrisio, Switzerland.

Anita Duranti, married Bassani, was a Jewish woman born in Ancona, Italy, on July 22nd, 1908. She had been working as a public employee in Rome since 1936, but, because of racial laws, she lost her job in 1941. To escape racial persecution, in 1943 she took refuge in the monastery of the Luxembourgian nuns in Rome. In 1968 she asked for an official certificate as racial persecuted in Mantua, as she had become a member of the local Jewish community.

In July 1952 the Mantua Prefecture was requested by the Italian "Ministero dell'Interno" (Home Secretary) to make an inquiry about the exact number of people who died into concentration camps in Germany.It emerged that 51 Mantuan Jewish people had been deported: 38 of them to “Alta Slesia” (Upper Silesia), 2 to the camp in Fossoli (Italy), 4 had been captured in Milan trying to escape to Switzerland and then put in San Vittore jail in Milan, 1 was captured as he was trying to leave Italy and then interned in the camp in Fossoli, 2 were taken in Quingentole (Mantua) and 4 in Milan, later on ...

In this subfonds, only two folders (n° 2890 and 2891) are related to the Holocaust period, but they are extremely important and actually they should be kept in another fonds of the Mantua State Archive, that is EGELI (see it), as they hold documents of the “dissequestro” (un-seizure) of the Jewish belongings after World War II.
